The National President Nigeria Union of Journalists Comrade Alhassan Yahya ,The Mandate Secretary FCT Health and Environment Secretariat (FCT-HES) Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe ,The Representative of the former Perm Sec Babagana Adam and The Director Health Insurance Dr Salamatu Belgore
They say journalism is a noble profession, but today we affirm that the lives behind the bylines must also be protected. Because the men and women who report the nation’s stories deserve a system that also protects their own.
Today marks a historic moment for the Nigeria Union of Journalists, FCT Council. For the first time in the history of our Council, we are flagging off a health insurance initiative specifically designed to support the welfare and wellbeing of journalists in the Federal Capital Territory. This is indeed, the beginning of a new chapter in how we protect those who dedicate their lives to informing society.
Journalists are often the first responders to national conversations, the first to magnify the voices of the people, and the first to bring critical issues to the attention of government and society. Yet, in the midst of these responsibilities, the health and welfare of journalists are too often overlooked. Today, we are correcting that narrative.
On behalf of the entire NUJ FCT Council, I wish to express our profound appreciation to the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Information, Honourable Akin Rotimi Jnr, whose vision and commitment helped initiate this laudable programme. Your belief that journalists deserve access to quality healthcare has translated into practical action, and we are deeply grateful for your support and advocacy.
Our sincere gratitude also goes to the Mandate Secretary of the FCTA Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, whose generosity has provided 150 free health insurance slots for members of our council. Your commitment to expanding access to healthcare and promoting preventive health practices demonstrates true leadership and compassion.
We are equally thankful to the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Babagana Adam, for his personal pledge to sponsor 50 additional journalists in memory of his late brother, Mohammed Alkali. Your gesture is both touching and impactful, and it speaks volumes about your dedication to the welfare of the media community.
These contributions have made it possible for 200 journalists in the FCT to benefit from health insurance coverage. This initiative will not only reduce the financial burden of healthcare but also encourage journalists to prioritize their health while continuing to serve society with dedication and integrity.
As journalists, we understand the power of information. When we are informed and we experience the benefits of initiatives like this firsthand, we become stronger advocates for the people we serve. This programme will therefore not only improve the lives of journalists but will also highlight the importance of health insurance among residents of the Federal Capital Territory.
The NUJ FCT Council remains committed to supporting the goals of universal health coverage. We will continue to partner with the FCT Health Insurance Scheme to educate the public, promote enrollment, and ensure that access to healthcare becomes a reality for every resident of the FCT.
Let me also use this opportunity to call on other stakeholders, government institutions, private organisations, and philanthropists to emulate this noble gesture. By working together, we can expand this initiative and ensure that many more journalists benefit from it in the years ahead.
To our colleagues who will benefit from the first batch of enrollments, I encourage you to take full advantage of this opportunity. Your health is essential not only to you and your families but also to the vital role you play in strengthening democracy and promoting accountability in our society.
