The Vice-Chancellor of Rivers State University (RSU), Professor Isaac Zeb-Obipi, has inaugurated a 28-member Road and Environmental Safety Committee to promote road safety, ensure compliance with traffic regulations and strengthen environmental sustainability across the University.

The inauguration, which took place on Friday, October 16, 2026, at the Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Room, underscores the University’s commitment to providing a safe, orderly and environmentally sustainable campus.

The committee comprises representatives drawn from various facilities and units of the University.

Speaking at the inauguration, Professor Zeb-Obipi charged members to discharge their responsibilities diligently and ensure that the University’s roads and immediate environment remain safe and conducive to academic, administrative and other university activities.

He explained that the committee would oversee road safety matters, review cases of reckless driving and recommend appropriate actions to the relevant university authorities. He also emphasised the need for strict compliance with established traffic regulations and responsible conduct among motorists and other road users within the campus.

The Vice-Chancellor further directed the committee to organise regular road safety awareness campaigns to educate members of the university community on the dangers of reckless driving, speeding, improper parking and other traffic violations that could endanger lives and property.

On environmental sustainability, the committee is expected to monitor environmental awareness initiatives, promote responsible waste management and encourage practices that support a clean, healthy and sustainable campus.

These efforts are aimed at fostering a culture of environmental responsibility among staff, students and other members of the university community.

The committee will also submit periodic reports and recommendations to the University Management, identify emerging road safety and environmental challenges and propose practical measures to address them.

Professor Zeb-Obipi stressed that achieving these objectives requires the collective commitment of all stakeholders. He therefore urged committee members to approach their assignment with dedication, professionalism and a strong sense of responsibility.

Responding on behalf of the committee, its Chairman, Dr Okemdi Chukwuma, expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for entrusting the members with the responsibility.

He described the inauguration as a welcome initiative that would provide an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to road safety, environmental sustainability and the overall development of the University.

Dr Chukuma assured the Vice-Chancellor and the University Management that the committee would work diligently to justify the confidence reposed in its members. He pledged that the committee would adopt a proactive approach, collaborate with relevant university departments and stakeholders and make recommendations to improve road safety and environmental management across the campus.

He added that the committee would prioritise public awareness, effective monitoring and compliance with established safety guidelines while encouraging members of the university community to take collective responsibility for maintaining a safe and clean environment.

The inauguration aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), through its focus on road safety, environmental protection and responsible waste management.
