The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has taken another significant step towards the realisation of a safer, smarter and digitally driven transport system in Nigeria as the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, mni, joined the Honourable Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajuddeen, on a high-level official visit to Cairo, Arab Republic of Egypt, in furtherance of the implementation of the Smart National Transport Databank Project.
The strategic visit, which followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) and Asia Arab Investment (AAI) in Abuja on 15 June 2026, marked a critical transition from partnership to implementation. It also demonstrated the commitment of the Federal Government and its strategic institutions to building an integrated, technology-driven transport management system capable of transforming mobility, road safety administration and national development.
The Nigerian delegation was led by the Honourable Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajuddeen, and included the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Shehu Mohammed, mni; the Director General and Chief Executive of NITT, Dr. Bayero Salih Farah; the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Transportation, Engr. Olufunso Olusesan Adebiyi; alongside other senior government officials.
For the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Smart National Transport Databank Project represents a landmark intervention that aligns squarely with its strategic vision of deploying technology and intelligence to save lives on Nigerian roads. The project is designed to establish a comprehensive national transport database that will generate reliable and real-time information for transport planning, infrastructure development, regulatory oversight, enforcement operations, crash analysis and evidence based policy formulation.
Speaking on the significance of the initiative, the Corps Marshal described the project as a transformative national asset capable of redefining road safety management in Nigeria. He noted that access to integrated transport data would greatly strengthen the Corps’ operational capacity by improving crash prediction, traffic management, strategic deployment of personnel and resources, compliance monitoring and overall service delivery.
According to him, the project reflects the future of transport governance where accurate data, innovation and institutional collaboration become the driving force behind safer roads and more efficient transportation systems.
A major highlight of the visit was the unveiling of the proposed Driver Training and Development Centres to be established across Nigeria by ARCORP Egypt in partnership with FRSC and NITT under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement. The centres are expected to raise the standard of driver education, promote professionalism among drivers, strengthen capacity development and contribute significantly to reducing road traffic crashes nationwide.
The Honourable Speaker of the House of Representatives reaffirmed the National Assembly’s readiness to provide the necessary legislative support required for the successful implementation of the project, emphasizing its importance to Nigeria’s economic growth, digital transformation and infrastructure development.
Beyond the signing of agreements, the Cairo engagement reinforced Nigeria’s resolve to embrace innovation, strengthen international partnerships and deploy cutting-edge technologies to modernize the transport sector. It equally provided a platform for stakeholders to reaffirm their collective commitment to delivering the Smart National Transport Databank Project as envisioned.
