The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, paid an official visit to the 2026 Batch B Stream I Orientation Camp in Wannune, Benue State, where he interacted with Corps Members and Camp Officials and reiterated the values of national service, discipline, entrepreneurship, and responsible citizenship.
On arrival at the camp, the Director-General was treated to a colourful Tiv cultural dance performance, which showcased the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the Tiv people of Benue State. The display added colour and excitement to the visit as Corps Members and camp officials warmly received the NYSC Chief Executive.
Addressing the Corps Members, Brigadier General Nafiu emphasized that the NYSC Scheme was established to expose young Nigerians to the country’s rich cultural diversity and promote national unity He encouraged them to build meaningful friendships and professional networks, describing interaction and integration as key objectives of the scheme.
The Director-General reminded Corps Members that the service year is a period of transition from academic life to the world of work and urged them to make the most of every opportunity available. He encouraged them to embrace the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme and develop entrepreneurial skills capable of creating employment opportunities and additional sources of income.
On financial management, he advised Corps members to cultivate a savings culture and practice prudent spending. He also encouraged them to invest any additional income earned during the service year and avoid overdependence on a single source of livelihood.
Brigadier General Nafiu further urged Corps Members to approach their Places of Primary Assignment with dedication and commitment, particularly those posted to schools, stressing the important role of education in national development He described teaching as a noble responsibility that contributes significantly to shaping future generations.
The Director-General also cautioned Corps Members against unauthorized travel and night journeys, emphasizing the need to comply with NYSC regulations and prioritize personal safety. He advised them to be security conscious, serve as responsible ambassadors of the scheme, and make positive contributions to their host communities.
Speaking on technology and civic responsibility, he encouraged Corps members to use social media responsibly and maintain positive digital footprints. He also urged eligible participants to take advantage of opportunities provided by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and contribute meaningfully to democratic processes.
Earlier, the Benue State Coordinator, Mrs. Veronica Garba welcomed the Director-General to the Orientation Camp and presented a report on the progress of the Orientation Course. She briefed him on camp activities and the number of Corps Members in camp while commending the corps members for their discipline, resilience, and active participation in camp programmes.
During an interactive session, Corps Members engaged the Director-General on issues relating to welfare, allowances, camp feeding, transportation, and kits. He assured them that their concerns had been communicated to the appropriate authorities and expressed optimism that improvements would be made as resources become available.
The visit also featured the recognition of the first Corps Member to report to camp BN/26B/0001 Miss Unung Felicia Udosinachi and the celebration of a Corps Member’s birthday. The Cash gifts on behalf of the Director-General were presented by the Director of Special Duties Mr George Mfongang to representatives of the Quarter Guard, Man O’ War, Camp Band, Cultural Dance Troupe, and Red cross in appreciation of their commitment and outstanding service throughout the Orientation Course.
